Tummy Tuck Q & A

What is a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck, also called abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that improves the shape and tone of your abdomen. It is a popular procedure for women who have gone through pregnancy and for both women and men after losing a significant amount of weight.

Achieving a tight and toned abdomen is not always easy, even for those who were never pregnant or overweight. Some of the causes of abdominal sagging or fullness include:

  • Hereditary factors
  • Aging
  • Previous surgical procedures
  • Weight fluctuations over time

A tummy tuck can give you a flat and toned abdomen you will feel confident about.

What are the steps involved in a tummy tuck?

There are many different techniques that can be used during tummy tuck procedures. You will receive general anesthesia prior to the procedure to allow you to rest comfortably throughout.

Dr. Li often begins with liposuction to remove extra fat in key surrounding areas. Next, he designs low incisions to gain access to the abdominal tissues. Excess fat and skin are then removed.

If you have experienced muscle damage or widening (rectus diastasis), he can repair your muscles during a tummy tuck. Once he is happy with your new shape, Dr. Li redrapes the abdominal skin and carefully closes your incisions. This results in a scar that is hidden low on the abdomen.

If you need to have fat or skin removed from your back or thighs, or fat added to your hips, these procedures can be incorporated into a tummy tuck and further enhance your curves.

Am I a good candidate for a tummy tuck?

Most men and women are good candidates for a tummy tuck procedure, but it is important to have a thorough consultation with Dr. Li to make sure this is the right surgery for you. Some of the reasons a person may not be a good candidate for this procedure include:

  • Possibility of future pregnancy
  • Severe health issues like diabetes or heart disease
  • Body mass index greater than 30
  • Previous abdominal surgery that left significant scarring
  • Significant weight loss goals

Dr. Li prides himself on taking time to listen to each patient’s concerns and goals. If there are other solutions that offer a better fit, you will get all the details needed to make an informed decision about your ideal treatment. To learn more, call CA Aesthetics to book an appointment today.
